National Arm Wrestling Championships 

Selangor – World Champion, Joffey Jolly and national champion Jake Chia Jun Kit live up to the forecast of 78 and 95 kilograms in the National Arm Wrestling Championships at aman Tropicana Recreational Hub, Teluk Panglima Garang, Selangor. 

Also on the preferred label was 57 kg world runner-up Safuan Asif who this time switched to the 63 kg category by beating Putrajaya teammate Iryan Syauqi Azhar in both left and right hand finals.  

Joffey beat Jong Chi Joon of Sarawak for left-hander and Mohamad Helmi Mohd. Hanapi (Johor) for the right-hander in the final while Jake of Putrajaya overcame teammates Saifulhisham Shaffie and Frankie Petrus (Sabah). 

Joffey, who almost received a surprise before rising through the left-handed deciding round after successfully surviving and absorbing Chi Joon's fierce pressure, switched to the 78kg category instead of 70 kg when he was world champion (right) in Rumia, Poland on December 6, 2019. 

But the Kota Kinabalu-born arm wrestler, Sabah, had to get along with teammate Calven Petrus in the battle for the overall right-handed title because the opponent was overweight, 105 kg and above. 

A total of 42 weight categories with 201 athletes from 14 states competed in the tournament with those contested for left and right hands namely Senior Men and Women, Youth Under 21, Teens Under 18 and Masters. 

Each senior category winner of this tournament will be selected to represent Malaysia at the Zioty Tur World Cup in Kuching, Sarawak. 

Sabah emerged the overall champion of the National Championships with 13 gold, 13 silver and seven bronze medals followed by Putrajaya who was runner-up, 12-11-11 and third place sarawak, 12-7-8. 

Arm-wrestling athletes from Sarawak determined to stand out at the national level. 

KUCHING: Arm wrestling athletes from Sarawak are aiming to clinch the overall title at the Fourth National Arm-Wrestling Championships in Petaling Jaya. 

Twenty-five of the four female athletes will take on a big responsibility at the tournament, which will be joined by 11 teams. 

"Our team finished third when we lost to Putrajaya and Sabah last year with six gold, six silver and six bronze medals and this time, we are working to improve our performance," Premier 101 Arm Wrestling Club vice-president Stephen Kee Chu Kiong said on Wednesday. 

The Sarawak team is in the bottom spot in 2017, and fifth in 2018. 

Stephen, who is also the deputy president of the Malaysian Arm Sports Association (MyArm) and president of the Asian Arm Wrestling Association, also expects this tournament to be dominated by Putrajaya, Sabah and Sarawak. 

"Leading the challenge for Sarawak is the country's number one arm wrestling female athlete and is ranked second in the International Arm Wrestling Federation (IFA), Abigail Kee Zing Ning," she said. 

Abigail won two silvers at the World Championships in Rumia, Poland in December 2019. 

"We will present a great challenge at the national championships and the athletes will be selected through the Sarawak Arm Wrestling Championships in October. 

Those who win at the national level will be selected to represent Malaysia to the World Arm Wrestling Championships in Florida, USA in September next year. 

At the same time, Stephen expressed his appreciation to MyArm president Zil Fadli who worked hard to help him develop arm wrestling in Sarawak and nationally. 

Muhd Shafiq Bin Abdullah, 23, a rising star from Sarawak won a gold medal in the National Arm-Wrestling Championship, on senior 70 kg and he will participate in world championships and also asia championships that will be held at Kuala Lumpuir on upcoming September.
